Wedding Thank You Note
Wedding thank you notes are the longest list most people ever write, and the hardest part is making the fortieth sound as warm as the first. Each one needs only three parts: the gift, how you'll use it, and a word about seeing them. Use the generator below for a quick draft, or work from ten notes for gifts, cash, travel and the people who made the day.

10 Wedding Thank You Note Examples
1.For a registry gift
Sincere · Short
Dear Aunt Carol and Uncle Jim, Thank you for the stand mixer! It's already earned its spot on the counter. Ben made his first loaf of bread last weekend, and it was only slightly lopsided. It meant so much to have you both at the wedding. We hope you'll come over soon for a slice. Love, Katie and Ben
2.For a cash gift
Sincere · Short
Dear Mr. and Mrs. Patel, Thank you for your generous wedding gift. We're putting it toward our first apartment together, and we'll think of you every time we sit down on the sofa it helped us buy. We were so glad you could celebrate with us. Thank you for your kindness. Warmly, Anjali and Rohan
3.For guests who traveled far
Sincere · Medium
Dear Liam and Grace, Thank you for flying all the way from Dublin to be at our wedding. Seeing you both on the dance floor at midnight was one of our favorite moments of the whole day. The Irish whiskey glasses are on our shelf, and we've already toasted you with them. We know what the trip took, and we're so grateful you made it. With love, Megan and Chris
4.To parents who helped pay for the wedding
Inspirational · Long
Dear Mom and Dad, There's no way to fit a proper thank you on one card, but we're going to try. Thank you for giving us the wedding we dreamed of. You made it possible, and then you spent the day making sure everyone else was happy. Dad, your toast had the whole tent in tears. Mom, we saw you fixing the centerpieces at 7 a.m. More than the day itself, thank you for showing us what a marriage looks like. We hope ours is half as kind and funny as yours. All our love, Sophie and James
5.For a gift from someone who could not attend
Sincere · Short
Dear Mrs. Hollis, Thank you for the beautiful quilt and the lovely card. We were sorry you couldn't be with us, but it felt like you were part of the day anyway. The quilt is on our bed now, and we think of you every time we see it. With warm thanks, Rosa and Tom
6.To the best man
Humorous · Short
Danny, Thank you for standing next to me, for not losing the rings and for a speech that only mentioned the camping trip a little. Twenty years of you being the brother I picked, and I've never been more glad of it. The next round's on me. And the one after that. Josh
7.To the officiant
Formal · Medium
Dear Reverend Adeyemi, Thank you for marrying us. Your words about patience and laughter were exactly what we needed to hear, and so many guests told us afterward how personal the ceremony felt. Thank you, too, for the months of meetings beforehand. We'll carry your advice with us. With gratitude, Grace and Samuel
8.For a wedding shower gift
Casual · Short
Dear Bethany, Thank you for the gorgeous set of linen napkins, and for coming to my shower. I've already planned our first dinner party around them. I'm so happy you'll be at the wedding, too. See you in June! Love, Holly
9.To a wedding vendor
Sincere · Medium
Dear Elena, Thank you for the flowers at our wedding. When the rain moved the ceremony indoors at the last minute, you rebuilt the whole arch in forty minutes, and no one would have guessed. Our guests are still asking who did the peonies. We'll be sending everyone your way, and we've left you a review. With thanks, Natalie and Marcus
10.A thank you for coming, for every guest
Casual · Short
Dear Mark and Lisa, Thank you for celebrating with us. Having you there made the day feel complete, and we loved catching up during the cocktail hour. Thank you, too, for the picture frame. Our favorite photo from the day is already in it. With love, Aisha and Daniel
When to Send Wedding Thank You Notes
- Gifts that arrive before the wedding: within two weeks, before the wedding rush.
- Gifts given at or after the wedding: within three months of the wedding.
- Shower gifts: within two weeks of the shower.
- Vendors and the officiant: within a month, ideally with an online review they can use.
Make it manageable: keep a list as gifts are opened, with the giver, the gift and one detail. Then write five a night and split the list with your partner, each writing to the people you know best.
What to Write in a Wedding Thank You Note
- Greet them as you would in person. "Dear Aunt Carol" or "Dear Mr. and Mrs. Patel".
- Name the gift. "Thank you for the stand mixer," not "thank you for the lovely gift."
- Say how you'll use it, or already have. The first loaf of bread, the frame with your favorite photo in it.
- Mention them and the day: that they came, traveled or were missed.
- Sign with both names, with the writer's name first.
How to Word the Tricky Ones
Cash or a check
Never mention the amount. Say "your generous gift" and what it's going toward, such as the apartment, the honeymoon or the new sofa, so the giver can picture it.
Guests who traveled
Acknowledge the trip, since it often cost more than the gift. One line about a moment you shared at the wedding makes it personal.
A gift from someone who couldn't come
Say you missed them, and tell them where the gift is now, so they feel part of your home even though they missed the day.
Parents and the wedding party
These deserve longer notes, written by hand. Name the specific things they did, like the toast, the 7 a.m. centerpieces or the rings that didn't get lost.
A duplicate or a gift you'll return
Thank them warmly for the gift itself and leave the return out of the note. If you're exchanging it, you can mention what you chose with it, as long as it doesn't sound like a correction.
Short Lines You Can Borrow
- Thank you for celebrating with us. It wouldn't have been the same without you.
- We'll think of you every time we use it.
- Thank you for traveling so far to be with us.
- Your generous gift is going toward our first home.
- We felt your love all day, even from far away.
Common Questions
Is a printed or emailed thank you okay?
A handwritten card is still expected for wedding gifts. A printed card with a handwritten line or two is acceptable for a very large wedding, but avoid email except for vendors.
Do guests who didn't bring a gift get a note?
It's a kind touch, especially for anyone who traveled or helped. Thank them for coming and for a moment you shared.
Who signs the card?
Whoever writes it signs first, then adds their partner's name. Both names show the thanks comes from you as a couple.
